Microblading in NJ: Cost, Results and the Gentler Alternative We Use Instead

Natural hair-stroke brows by Soulu, an alternative to microblading in New Jersey

Looking for microblading in New Jersey? You are probably after one thing: natural, fuller brows made of fine hair strokes that you don't have to draw on every morning. At Soulu in Edgewater, NJ, we create that look with nanoblading, a gentler hair-stroke technique done with an ultra-fine needle instead of a blade. It costs $750 – $1,700 and usually lasts 1–2 years.

Below is what microblading is, what it costs in New Jersey, the state rules every artist must follow, how to choose a studio and why we chose nanoblading for our clients.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow tattoo. The artist uses a hand tool with a row of tiny blades to make fine cuts in the skin and place pigment into them. The result is a brow made of individual hair strokes.

It became popular because, for the first time, permanent brows looked like real hair rather than a solid tattooed shape. Today many artists, including us, create the same hair-stroke look with a machine and a single ultra-fine needle: nanoblading.

Microblading vs Nanoblading in One Minute

Microblading Nanoblading (what we do)
Tool Hand tool with tiny blades Machine with one ultra-fine needle
Skin Small cuts No cutting
Strokes over time Can blur and spread Stay crisper
Oily skin Fades and blurs faster Holds up better
Usually lasts About 12–18 months 1–2 years

The full side-by-side, including powder brows, is in nanoblading vs microblading vs powder brows.

Is Microblading Out of Style?

The hair-stroke look is not going anywhere: natural, brushed-up brows are what most of our clients ask for. What has changed is the tool. Many experienced artists have moved from the blade to the machine because the strokes heal crisper and the skin is treated more gently. So if you have been searching for "microblading near me," what you most likely want is the result, and that is exactly what nanoblading gives you.

How Much Does Microblading Cost in NJ?

Prices for hair-stroke brows in New Jersey vary widely, from a few hundred dollars at new artists to well over $1,000 with senior artists. The price usually reflects experience, the time spent on each stroke and the studio's standards.

At Soulu:

Service Price
Nanoblading with our team artists (Nelly, Elena) $750
Nanoblading with Nadia Afanaseva, founder $1,700
Nanoblading Express: tail, arch or sparse areas only, 1 hour from $1,000
Powder, ombre or combo brows $400 – $1,700

The consultation is free, and new clients get 10% off their first visit. You can also pay over time with Cherry or Affirm. See all prices in how much permanent makeup costs.

What a Cheap Microblading Deal Can Cost You

A very low price often means an inexperienced artist or a rushed appointment. Fixing brows that healed blurry, too dark or uneven usually means removal sessions plus a new procedure, which ends up costing more than doing it right the first time.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

Classic microblading typically lasts about 12–18 months, less on oily skin. Nanoblading at Soulu usually lasts 1–2 years. Either way, a color refresh every 12–18 months keeps the strokes crisp, and a perfecting session at least six weeks after the first procedure fills any strokes that healed lighter. More in permanent makeup touch-ups.

Microblading Rules in New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Health treats microblading and other permanent cosmetics as forms of micropigmentation, which falls under the state's body art rules. In practice, that means:

  • the procedure must be done in a licensed body art establishment;
  • artists must meet the state's training and certification requirements;
  • licenses from other states don't transfer automatically.

Before you book anywhere, it is fair to ask about the studio's license. You can read the state's guidance in the NJ Department of Health microblading guidance.

How to Choose a Microblading or Nanoblading Artist in NJ

  1. Look at healed results, not only fresh photos. Fresh brows always look sharper than they will be.
  2. Ask which tool they use and why. A good artist will explain how it suits your skin.
  3. Make sure you approve the drawn shape before anything starts.
  4. Check hygiene: single-use needles opened in front of you.
  5. Ask about the perfecting session and what happens if some strokes heal lighter.
  6. Ask about your skin type. On very oily skin, hair strokes alone may not be the best choice; powder or combo brows may last better.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Hair-stroke brows are great if you have sparse or thinning brows, gaps or small scars, over-plucked brows that never grew back, or light hairs you fill in every day. If your skin is very oily or you love a filled-in makeup look, ask about powder brows or combo brows.

Tell us during the consultation if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take blood thinners or have a skin condition in the brow area. See who should wait before permanent makeup.

Already Have Old Microblading?

That is common. Many of our clients come with microblading that blurred, faded unevenly or changed color. Depending on how dark the old pigment is, we can often work over it with fresh nanoblading strokes or soft shading. If the old work is too dark or has turned gray, red or blue, lightening or removal may come first. We decide together at a free consultation.

What Healing Looks Like

Brows look darker and sharper for the first days, flake during the first week, can look light or patchy around weeks 2–3 and show the final result after 4–6 weeks. The complete timeline, including when you can wash your face, work out or wear makeup, is in our eyebrow tattoo healing guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do microblading at Soulu?

We create the microblading look with nanoblading: individual hair strokes made with a machine and an ultra-fine needle instead of a blade. It is gentler on the skin, and the strokes usually stay crisper.

How much does microblading cost in NJ?

Prices vary widely by artist. At Soulu, nanoblading costs $750 – $1,700 depending on the artist, and Nanoblading Express starts at $1,000. The consultation is free.

Is nanoblading the same as microblading?

Both create hair strokes, but microblading uses a hand blade that makes small cuts, while nanoblading uses a machine with a single ultra-fine needle. Nanoblading usually heals crisper and lasts longer, especially on oily skin.

How long does microblading last?

Classic microblading typically lasts about 12–18 months. Nanoblading usually lasts 1–2 years, with a refresh every 12–18 months.

Can you do nanoblading over old microblading?

Often yes, once the old work has faded enough. If it is too dark or has changed color, lightening or removal may be needed first.

Does microblading need a license in New Jersey?

Yes. New Jersey treats microblading as micropigmentation under its body art rules, so it must be done in a licensed establishment by an artist who meets the state's requirements.
