Permanent eyebrows change a lot in the first six weeks. They look too dark, then they flake, then they seem to fade or go patchy, and only then do they settle. Almost every client messages us at least once during healing, so here is the full eyebrow tattoo healing process, day by day.

This timeline applies to nanoblading, microblading, powder and ombre brows and combo brows. The surface usually heals in 7–10 days, and the final result shows after 4–6 weeks.

Healing Timeline at a Glance

When What you see What is happening
Days 1–2 Darker, warmer, sharper brows; mild redness Fresh pigment sits on top of the healing skin
Days 3–7 Dryness, itching, light flaking The top layer of skin renews itself
Days 7–14 Light, uneven or slightly gray color New skin covers the pigment and looks cloudy
Weeks 4–6 The color settles; the healed result appears The skin becomes clear again

Days 1–2: Darker and Sharper Than Expected

Your brows look darker, warmer, sharper and more defined than the final result. Don't worry: they soften noticeably as they heal. Mild redness or tenderness is normal.

What to do:

  • Wash your hands before touching the area.
  • If clear fluid appears, gently blot it with clean gauze or a tissue. Do not wipe or rub.
  • Apply a paper-thin layer of the recommended aftercare product with a clean cotton swab. The brows should not look greasy.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase, on your back if possible.

Days 3–7: Dryness, Itching and Flaking

Dryness, itching and light flaking begin. This is the most important stage for the final result.

  • Do not pick, scratch, rub or peel the brows. Removing flakes early can cause pigment loss, scarring or infection.
  • Avoid direct shower pressure and soaking the brows.
  • No brow makeup, concealer or foundation on the treated area.
  • Keep hair and bangs away from the brows, and avoid sleeping on your face.

Days 7–14: Why Your Brows Look Patchy

This is when most clients panic. Once the flakes come off, the color can look very light, uneven or slightly gray, and some strokes may seem to have disappeared.

This is normal. New skin has formed over the pigment and still looks cloudy. The color is there; it just isn't visible yet. Over the next weeks the skin clears and the pigment shows through again.

Weeks 4–6: Your Healed Brows

The color gradually settles and your healed brows become visible. Only now can you judge the final color and shape. Healed brows are always softer than fresh brows.

Why Some Areas Heal Lighter

Even with perfect aftercare, some strokes or areas can heal lighter than others:

  • Oily skin holds pigment less evenly than dry skin;
  • Picking or rubbing during the flaking stage;
  • Sun, sweat or water on the brows while they heal;
  • natural differences in how each person's skin heals.

That is exactly what the perfecting session is for. Once the brows have fully healed, at least six weeks after the first procedure, we fill any light areas and fine-tune the color and shape. Read more about touch-ups.

Nanoblading vs Powder Brows Healing

The stages are the same, but they look a little different:

  • Nanoblading and microblading: individual strokes can look faint or broken during days 7–14, then reappear.
  • Powder and ombre brows: the shading can look patchy or almost disappear for a while, then return softer and more even.

When Can I Sweat, Wash My Face or Wear Makeup?

  • Wash your face: yes, gently, but avoid direct shower pressure on the brows and pat them dry.
  • Work out and sweat: avoid heavy sweating, hot yoga, saunas and steam rooms until the brows have fully healed, usually 7–30 days or until all flaking has stopped.
  • Swim: no pools, hot tubs, lakes or ocean until fully healed.
  • Makeup: no makeup on the brows until healed. You can wear makeup on the rest of your face, keeping it away from the brows.

What to Avoid Until Fully Healed

Usually 7–30 days, or until all flaking has stopped:

  • retinol, acids, exfoliating or lightening products near the brows;
  • direct sun and tanning beds;
  • facials, peels, microneedling or lasers near the brows;
  • waxing, threading, tinting, henna or brow lamination.

When to Call a Doctor

Some redness and tenderness in the first days is normal. Contact a healthcare provider if you notice increasing redness, swelling or pain after the first few days, pus, a hot feeling in the area or fever.

Long-Term Care

Once healed, use SPF 30 or higher on your brows to slow fading, keep strong exfoliants and retinoids away from them, and tell your skincare or laser provider that you have permanent makeup. The complete instructions are on our brows aftercare page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for an eyebrow tattoo to heal?

The surface usually heals in 7–10 days. The final, healed result shows after 4–6 weeks.

Why do my brows look patchy two weeks after nanoblading or microblading?

After the flaking stage, new skin covers the pigment and looks cloudy, so brows can look light, uneven or gray between days 7 and 14. The color usually settles by weeks 4–6.

Do permanent eyebrows get lighter as they heal?

Yes. Fresh brows look much darker and sharper than the healed result. The color softens as the skin heals.

When can I work out after permanent eyebrows?

Avoid heavy sweating, hot yoga, saunas and swimming until the brows have fully healed, usually 7–30 days or until all flaking has stopped.

Can I wash my face after brow permanent makeup?

Yes, gently. Avoid direct shower pressure and soaking the brows, and pat the area dry with a clean tissue.

When can I do a touch-up?

At least six weeks after the first procedure, once the brows have fully healed.
