Nanoblading, microblading and powder brows all give you brows that are done when you wake up, but they look, heal and last differently. Choosing the wrong technique for your skin is the most common reason people are disappointed with their permanent brows.
The short answer: choose nanoblading for the most natural hair strokes, powder brows for a soft makeup look or oily skin, and combo brows if you want both. At Soulu we do nanoblading rather than microblading, and below we explain why.

What Is Nanoblading?
Nanoblading draws individual hair strokes with a machine and a single ultra-fine needle. Each stroke follows the direction of your natural hairs, and the artist varies length, angle and density so the brow looks like real hair.
Despite the name, there is no blade: the needle places pigment without cutting the skin. Read the full nanoblading guide.
What Is Microblading?
Microblading uses a manual hand tool with a row of tiny blades that make small cuts in the skin and deposit pigment into them. It became popular because it creates hair strokes, but the cuts mean more trauma to the skin, and the strokes tend to blur and spread over time, especially on oily skin.
What Are Powder Brows?
Powder brows use a machine to place tiny dots of pigment that build up a soft shade, like brow powder or pencil. Ombre brows are lighter at the front and gradually deeper toward the tail. Combo brows combine fine hair strokes at the front with shading through the body and tail.
Nanoblading vs Microblading: Which Is Better?
For most clients, nanoblading is better than microblading:
- More natural strokes. A single ultra-fine needle draws thinner, crisper strokes than a blade.
- Less trauma. There are no cuts, so healing is usually gentler, with less redness and scabbing.
- Holds up better on oily skin. Microblading strokes are known to blur on oily skin; nanoblading strokes stay crisper.
- Lasts longer. Nanoblading usually lasts 1–2 years; microblading is typically around 12–18 months.
That is why Soulu does nanoblading instead of microblading.
Nanoblading vs Powder Brows: Which Should You Choose?
Ask yourself what your brows look like on your best day:
- You brush them and leave them natural → nanoblading.
- You fill them in with pencil or powder every morning → powder brows.
- You fill in only the tails → combo brows.
Your skin decides the rest:
- Normal or dry skin: both techniques heal well; choose by the look you like.
- Oily or combination skin: powder brows hold their shape better, or choose combo brows.
- Mature skin: soft shading usually looks more flattering than very fine strokes.
Powder Brows vs Microblading
Powder brows do not cut the skin, suit all skin types, including oily and mature, and usually last longer than microblading. Microblading gives hair strokes, but if you want strokes, nanoblading gives a crisper result without the blade.
Ombre Brows vs Powder Brows
They are variations of the same technique. Powder brows are an even, soft shade through the whole brow. Ombre brows are lighter at the front and deeper toward the tail, for a natural gradient with a defined finish. At Soulu, powder, ombre and combo brows are priced the same.
Healing: Fresh vs Healed
All three techniques look darker and sharper for the first days, flake during the first week, may look light or patchy for a while and show the final result after 4–6 weeks. Healed brows always look softer than fresh ones. See our day-by-day eyebrow tattoo healing guide.
A perfecting session at least six weeks after the first procedure refines any technique.
Does One Hurt More Than the Others?
All brow procedures at Soulu are done with numbing cream. Most clients describe nanoblading as mild pressure and powder brows as a light vibration or tingling. More in does permanent makeup hurt?
Can I Get Nanoblading Over Old Microblading?
Often yes, once the old work has faded enough. If old pigment is too dark or has changed color, a correction or permanent makeup removal may come first. Book a free consultation so we can see your brows in person.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is nanoblading better than microblading?
For most clients, yes. Nanoblading uses a single ultra-fine needle instead of a blade, so it is gentler on the skin, the strokes stay crisper and results usually last longer, especially on oily skin.
What is the difference between nanoblading and powder brows?
Nanoblading creates individual hair strokes for a natural look; powder brows create soft shading for a filled-in makeup look. Powder brows are better for oily skin.
Which lasts longer, microblading or powder brows?
Powder brows usually last longer: about 1–2 years, compared with roughly 12–18 months for microblading.
Which is best for oily skin?
Powder or combo brows. Hair strokes can blur faster on oily skin, while shading holds its shape well.
What are combo brows?
Combo brows combine fine hair strokes at the front of the brow with soft shading through the body and tail. At Soulu they cost the same as powder brows: $400 – $1,700.
