Permanent Brows Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential for healthy healing and even pigment retention. Always follow the specific instructions and use only the aftercare product recommended by your artist.

STEP-BY-STEP CARE

Protect your healing result

Follow each stage carefully. Keep the treated area clean, use only your artist’s recommended product and let all flaking release naturally.

01
DAY ONE

First 24 Hours

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the treated area.
  • If lymph or clear fluid appears, gently blot it with clean, dry gauze or a disposable tissue. Do not wipe or rub.
  • Pat dry with a clean disposable tissue. Never rub.
  • Apply a paper-thin layer of the recommended aftercare product with a clean cotton swab. The brows should not look greasy or heavily coated.
  • Do not apply additional skincare products or makeup near the brows.
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase and, if possible, sleep on your back.
02
EARLY HEALING

Days 2–7

  • Avoid direct shower pressure, soaking or prolonged water exposure.
  • Apply only the recommended amount of aftercare product.
  • Do not use brow makeup, concealer or foundation directly on the treated area.
  • Do not touch the brows unless you are applying aftercare.
  • Allow all dryness, flaking and light crusting to come off naturally.
  • Do not pick, scratch, rub or peel the brows. Premature removal can cause pigment loss, scarring or infection.
  • Keep hair and bangs away from the treated area.
  • Avoid sleeping directly on your face.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds.
03
PROTECT THE PIGMENT

Avoid Until Fully Healed

Usually 7–30 days, or until all flaking has stopped:

  • Retinol, tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone, exfoliating products or lightening products near the brows.
  • Swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes and ocean water.
  • Saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and activities that cause heavy sweating.
  • Direct sunlight and tanning beds.
  • Facials, chemical peels, microneedling, lasers or other treatments near the brows.
  • Waxing, threading, tinting, henna or brow lamination.
  • Antibiotic ointments, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or home remedies unless prescribed by a healthcare professional.
HEALING TIMELINE

What to expect

Do not judge the final color or shape before the brows have healed completely. Any necessary touch-up should be performed only after the minimum healing period recommended by your artist.

Long-Term Care

  • Once fully healed, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to help reduce premature fading.
  • Keep strong exfoliants, retinoids and professional skin treatments away from the tattooed area whenever possible.
  • Inform your skincare or laser provider that you have permanent makeup.
  1. 1

    Days 1–2

The brows may look darker, warmer, sharper and more defined than expected. Mild redness or tenderness may occur.

  2. 2

    Days 3–7

Dryness, itching and light flaking may begin.

  3. 3

    Days 7–14

The color may look very light, uneven or slightly gray as new skin forms over the pigment.

  4. 4

    Weeks 4–6

The color gradually settles and the healed result becomes visible.

IMPORTANT

For all procedures

Contact your artist and seek medical advice if you develop increasing redness, heat, swelling, worsening pain, pus, foul-smelling drainage, red streaks, fever or symptoms that become worse after initially improving.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, a rapidly spreading rash or any severe allergic reaction. Permanent makeup can rarely cause infection or allergic reactions, as noted by the FDA .

If you ever need an MRI, tell the radiologist or MRI technician that you have permanent makeup, especially permanent eyeliner.
