Nanoblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow technique that draws individual hair strokes with an ultra-fine needle, so your brows look naturally fuller rather than drawn on. It is the technique I recommend most often to clients who say, "I want my brows back, but I don't want them to look tattooed."
In this guide I explain how nanoblading works, who it suits, how long it lasts, what it costs and what to expect from the appointment and healing.
What Is Nanoblading?
Nanoblading is a form of permanent makeup for the eyebrows. The artist uses a machine with a single ultra-fine nano needle to place pigment in thin strokes that follow the direction of your natural brow hairs.
Because the needle is so fine and the pigment sits in the upper layer of the skin, the strokes stay crisp and thin. The artist builds them up one by one, varying length, angle and density, so the brow looks like real hair rather than a solid shape.
Despite the name, nanoblading does not use a blade. That is the main difference from microblading.
Is Nanoblading Permanent?
Not completely. Nanoblading is semi-permanent: the pigment gradually softens and usually lasts 1–2 years. Most clients refresh their brows every 12–18 months to keep the strokes crisp. If you ever want a different look, faded strokes are much easier to change than a traditional tattoo.
Who Is Nanoblading For?
Nanoblading is a great choice if you have:
- sparse or thinning brows, gaps or small scars in the brow;
- over-plucked brows that never grew back;
- light or barely visible brow hairs;
- uneven brows that you correct with a pencil every morning;
- a preference for a natural look rather than a defined, made-up brow.
Nanoblading for Oily Skin
Nanoblading works on many skin types, but on very oily skin hair strokes can soften faster. If your skin is oily, we may suggest powder brows or combo brows: hair strokes at the front with soft shading through the tail.
Nanoblading for Men
Nanoblading suits men well, because fine hair strokes look like natural, slightly fuller brows, with no "makeup" effect.
Nanoblading for Hair Loss
Clients with thinning brows or brow hair loss often choose nanoblading because it recreates the look of individual hairs. Tell us about any medical condition behind the hair loss during the consultation.
Nanoblading vs Microblading
Both create hair strokes, but microblading uses a hand tool with a row of tiny blades that make small cuts in the skin. Nanoblading uses a single ultra-fine needle on a machine, so it is gentler on the skin, the strokes stay crisper and results usually last longer, especially on oily skin.
We compare all three popular techniques side by side in nanoblading vs microblading vs powder brows.

Before Your Appointment
- Book a consultation. We discuss the shape and color you want and look at your skin.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before the procedure.
- Skip retinoids and acids on the brow area for about a week before.
- Don't tint or wax your brows in the days before, so your artist sees your natural hairs.
- Tell us about medication and health conditions, including blood thinners, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and skin conditions. See who should wait before permanent makeup.
What Happens During the Procedure
- Shape design. Your artist measures your face and draws the brow shape. You approve it in the mirror before we start.
- Color matching. We choose a pigment for your hair color and skin tone.
- Numbing. A numbing cream is applied, so most clients feel mild pressure rather than pain.
- Hair strokes. The artist draws each stroke with the fine needle. The full procedure takes about 2–2.5 hours.
- Aftercare briefing. You go home with written instructions.
Nanoblading Healing Process
Right after the procedure your brows look darker and sharper than the final result. This is normal.
- Days 1–2: brows look darker and more defined; mild redness or tenderness.
- Days 3–7: dryness, itching and light flaking. Do not pick or scratch.
- Days 7–14: strokes can look light, patchy or slightly gray while new skin forms.
- Weeks 4–6: the final color settles.

Nanoblading Aftercare
- Apply a paper-thin layer of the recommended aftercare product with a clean cotton swab.
- Avoid direct shower pressure and soaking the brows.
- No sweating, saunas, swimming or direct sun until fully healed.
- No brow makeup, tinting, waxing or lamination until fully healed.
- Once healed, use SPF 30 or higher on your brows to slow fading.
The complete instructions are on our brows aftercare page.
How Long Does Nanoblading Last?
Nanoblading usually lasts 1–2 years. Oily skin, sun exposure, active skincare such as retinoids and acids, and frequent exfoliation make the pigment fade faster. A perfecting session at least six weeks after the first procedure and a refresh every 12–18 months keep the result looking fresh. Learn more about touch-ups.
Possible Side Effects and Risks
Nanoblading is generally safe when performed by a trained artist with sterile, single-use needles. Possible issues include an allergic reaction to the pigment (rare), infection if hygiene or aftercare is poor, and a result you do not like, such as an uneven shape or the wrong color. The best protection is an experienced artist, a design you approve before the procedure and careful aftercare.
