Permanent Makeup Touch-Ups: Perfecting Session vs Color Refresh

Permanent makeup is not a one-time procedure that lasts forever. Two kinds of permanent makeup touch-ups keep it looking its best: the perfecting session after the first procedure and the color refresh every year or so.

Here is the difference, when to book each one, why permanent makeup fades and how to make it last longer.

Two Types of Touch-Ups

Perfecting session Color refresh
When At least 6 weeks after the first procedure Usually every 12–18 months
Why Fill areas that healed lighter, fine-tune color and shape Restore color that has softened over time
Who needs it Most clients Anyone who wants to keep the result crisp

The Perfecting Session (6+ Weeks)

Skin does not hold pigment perfectly evenly the first time. After healing, some strokes or areas may look lighter, or you may want the shape slightly bolder.

The perfecting session is booked at least six weeks after the first procedure, once the skin has fully healed. During it we fill any spots that healed lighter, fine-tune the color and adjust the shape or thickness if needed.

For lips, the SPCP (Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals) recommends waiting at least six weeks before a touch-up.

Why Not Sooner?

Before six weeks the skin is still healing and the color has not settled. Adding pigment too early can overload the skin and lead to a result that is too dark or uneven once it heals. During weeks 2–4, brows and lips often look lighter than they really are; see the eyebrow healing stages and lip blush healing stages.

The Color Refresh (Every 12–18 Months)

Permanent makeup usually lasts 1–2 years. Over time the pigment softens naturally. A color refresh every 12–18 months restores the crispness before brows, lips or eyeliner fade too far.

Booking a refresh on time is usually quicker and easier than starting again once the pigment has almost disappeared.

Does Permanent Makeup Fade?

Yes. Permanent makeup is designed to fade gradually, which is why it is often called semi-permanent. That is a good thing: your face, style and brow trends change, and faded pigment is much easier to update than a traditional tattoo.

How Does Permanent Makeup Age?

As it fades, permanent makeup becomes lighter and softer. With time, the color can also shift slightly, for example toward a cooler or warmer tone, especially without sun protection. A refresh corrects the tone as well as the intensity. If old permanent makeup has changed color a lot, a correction or removal may be needed first.

What Makes Permanent Makeup Fade Faster?

  • Sun. UV light breaks down pigment. Use SPF 30 or higher on healed brows and an SPF lip balm on lips.
  • Oily skin. Pigment fades faster on oily skin than on dry or normal skin.
  • Active skincare. Retinoids, acids, peels and strong exfoliants near the treated area.
  • Professional treatments. Facials, lasers and microneedling near brows, lips or eyes. Tell your provider that you have permanent makeup.
  • Aftercare in the first weeks. Picking flakes, sun or water exposure during healing can take pigment out early.

How Long Does Permanent Makeup Last Without a Touch-Up?

Usually 1–2 years, but without a perfecting session some areas may stay lighter from the start, and without a refresh the pigment keeps softening each year.

Procedure Usually lasts Refresh
Nanoblading 1–2 years every 12–18 months
Powder & ombre brows 1–2 years every 12–18 months
Lip blushing 1–2 years every 12–18 months
Permanent eyeliner 1–2 years every 12–18 months

Signs It Is Time for a Refresh

  • Brows look softer or patchy, and you start filling them in again;
  • Lip color has become pale or uneven;
  • The eyeliner looks less defined;
  • The color has shifted to a cooler or warmer tone than you like.

Can You Touch Up Permanent Makeup Done Somewhere Else?

Often yes. Book a free consultation so we can see the healed result and recommend a refresh, a correction or permanent makeup removal.

When should I get a permanent makeup touch-up?

The perfecting session is booked at least six weeks after the first procedure. A color refresh is usually needed every 12–18 months.

Is a touch-up necessary?

Most clients benefit from the perfecting session, because skin rarely holds pigment perfectly evenly the first time.

Does permanent makeup fade?
