Lip blushing is a cosmetic lip tattoo that adds soft, even color and a clearer lip line, so your lips look fresher and fuller without lipstick. It is done with a fine needle and numbing cream, takes 1.5–2 hours and usually lasts 1–2 years. At Soulu in Edgewater, NJ, lip blushing costs $400 – $1,700, depending on the artist.
Here is how it works, which color to choose, what results to expect on different lips and whether it is worth it.
What Is Lip Blushing?
Lip blushing (also called a lip blush tattoo, permanent lip color or "permanent lipstick") places pigment into the upper layer of the lips with a permanent makeup machine. The color is built up in soft layers, so the result looks like naturally rosy lips or a sheer stain, not a painted-on lipstick.
It does three things:
- evens out lip color, including pale, uneven or faded areas;
- defines the lip border, which makes lips look fuller;
- adds a chosen tint, from barely-there to a richer shade.
What Lip Blushing Is Not
- Not filler. It changes color and definition, not volume. More even color and a defined border often make lips look fuller, but they don't get bigger. If you want more volume, that is a job for a licensed injector.
- Not a bold lipstick tattoo. Healed color is always softer than on the first days.
- Not forever. It fades gradually and is refreshed every 12–18 months.
Lip Blush Colors: Natural, Soft or Bold
We choose the shade with you and follow your natural lip line. Most clients pick one of three intensities:
| Intensity | What it looks like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Natural tint | A color close to your own lips; evens the tone and defines the border | Healthy, naturally rosy lips; no-makeup look |
| Soft blush | A little more color, like a sheer balm or stain | Fresher, fuller-looking lips without lipstick |
| Bolder tint | A richer shade | Clients who love wearing lipstick |
Tip: if you are torn between two shades, choose the softer one. It is easy to add color at the perfecting session and much harder to take it away.
Lip Blushing Results on Different Lips
Thin Lips
On thin lips, a clearly defined border and soft color make the lips look fuller and more balanced. We keep the shape within your natural lip line, so the result looks like your lips, not a drawn-on outline.
Mature Lips
Lips naturally lose color and definition with age, and lipstick tends to bleed into fine lines. Lip blushing restores a fresh, even tone and a clear border, and gives lipstick a defined edge to stay within.
Darker or Uneven Lip Tones
Darker lips and lips with uneven pigmentation need a carefully chosen pigment so the healed color looks warm and even rather than gray or patchy. We assess your natural lip tone at the consultation and choose the color for your lips specifically. Tell us if you have tried lip procedures before.
Lips With Cold Sore History
A lip procedure can trigger a cold sore in people who carry the herpes simplex virus. If you have ever had cold sores, tell us in advance; your doctor may recommend antiviral medication before the appointment.
Lip Blushing Before and After: Fresh vs Healed
Right after the procedure, color looks bright and bold, and lips may be slightly swollen. During healing the color can look very light for a while, then settles into a softer, natural shade after 4–6 weeks. That is why before-and-after photos are only fair when they show healed results.
We cover every stage in lip blush healing day by day, including when you can wear lipstick again.
How the Appointment Works
- Consultation: we talk about the color and shape you want and your health history. At Soulu it is free.
- Design: your artist outlines the shape; you approve it before we start.
- Numbing: numbing cream is applied before and during the procedure. Most clients describe mild pressure. Lips are more sensitive than brows; see does permanent makeup hurt?
- Color: the pigment is built up in soft layers over about 1.5–2 hours.
- Aftercare: you go home with written instructions; see our lip blush aftercare.
How Much Does Lip Blushing Cost?
| Artist | Price at Soulu |
|---|---|
| Charlene | $400 |
| Nelly, Elena | $600 |
| Nadia Afanaseva, founder | $1,700 |
The consultation is free, new clients get 10% off their first visit, and you can pay over time with Cherry or Affirm. Lips often heal less evenly than brows, so most clients also benefit from a perfecting session at least six weeks later.
How Long Does Lip Blushing Last?
Usually 1–2 years. To keep the color fresh longer:
- use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher every day once healed;
- keep exfoliating and anti-aging products away from the lip border;
- tell providers about your lip blush before fillers, lasers or peels;
- book a refresh every 12–18 months.
Is Lip Blushing Worth It?
It is worth it if you:
- wear lip tint or lipstick most days and are tired of reapplying it;
- have pale, uneven or faded lip color;
- feel your lips lost definition with age;
- want to look fresh at the gym, on vacation or first thing in the morning.
It may not be the right choice if you want more volume (that is filler) or love changing your lip color dramatically every day. You can still wear any lipstick over healed lip blush.
