The lips are delicate and may swell, dry and peel more noticeably than other permanent makeup areas. Follow these instructions carefully and use only the product recommended by your artist.
STEP-BY-STEP CARE
Protect your healing result
Follow each stage carefully. Keep the treated area clean, use only your artist’s recommended product and let all flaking release naturally.
01
DAY ONE
First 24 Hours
Wash your hands before every contact with your lips.
After eating or drinking, gently rinse the lips with clean water and blot dry.
Apply a thin, even layer of the recommended lip aftercare product using a clean cotton swab.
Keep the lips lightly moisturized, but do not apply a thick or sticky coating.
Do not lick, bite, rub or stretch the lips unnecessarily.
Drink carefully. A straw may be used if it helps keep the lips clean and comfortable.
Eat small bites and avoid foods that require excessive stretching of the mouth.
Sleep on a clean pillowcase with your head slightly elevated.
A cool compress may help with swelling if approved by your artist. Place it over a clean barrier for short intervals. Never apply ice directly to the lips.
02
EARLY HEALING
Days 2–10
Continue applying a thin layer of the recommended product whenever the lips begin to feel dry.
Use a clean cotton swab for every application. Do not apply the product with unwashed fingers.
Gently clean or rinse the lips after meals and pat dry.
Allow all dry skin and flakes to separate naturally.
Do not pick, peel, bite or pull loose skin. This can remove pigment and create uneven healing.
Brush your teeth carefully and avoid getting toothpaste on the treated surface.
Do not use whitening toothpaste, teeth-whitening strips or professional whitening treatments until the lips have healed.
03
UNTIL THE SURFACE HAS HEALED
Food and Drink
Avoid very hot, spicy, salty or acidic foods and drinks if they cause burning or irritation.
Avoid citrus fruits and juices directly on the lips.
Avoid greasy foods that are difficult to remove without rubbing.
Avoid alcohol for at least 24–48 hours, as it may increase dryness and swelling.
Do not share cups, utensils, food, lip products or towels.
04
USUALLY 7–10 DAYS
Avoid Until Fully Healed
Lipstick, lip liner, gloss and non-approved lip products.
Lip scrubs, exfoliants, acids, retinoids or plumping products.
Kissing, oral sexual contact and any activity that creates friction or exposes the lips to another person’s saliva.
Smoking or vaping whenever possible, as heat, chemicals and repeated lip movement can irritate the healing tissue.
Swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes and ocean water.
Saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and heavy sweating.
Direct sunlight and tanning beds.
Facials, chemical peels, lasers, fillers or other treatments around the mouth.
05
IMPORTANT
Cold Sore Precautions
A lip procedure may trigger a cold sore in someone who carries the herpes simplex virus.
If antiviral medication was prescribed, continue taking it exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
Do not change the dose or use someone else’s medication.
If you develop tingling, unusual burning, clustered blisters or a suspected cold sore, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
HEALING TIMELINE
What to expect
Lip color can take up to six weeks to reveal its final appearance. Do not schedule a touch-up before the lips are completely healed; the SPCP recommends a minimum of six weeks for lip procedures.
Long-Term Care
Once healed, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher lip balm daily.
Reapply sun protection during prolonged outdoor exposure.
Keep exfoliating and anti-aging products away from the lip border whenever possible.
Inform providers about your lip blush before fillers, lasers, peels or other treatments.
1
Days 1–2
Swelling, tenderness and very bright or dark color are normal.
2
Days 2–5
The lips may feel dry, tight and chapped. Light peeling usually begins.
3
Days 5–10
Peeling finishes and the surface begins to feel smooth.
4
Weeks 2–4
The color may appear very light, uneven or almost invisible temporarily.
5
Weeks 4–6
The pigment gradually returns and settles into its healed shade.

Contact your artist and seek medical advice if you develop increasing redness, heat, swelling, worsening pain, pus, foul-smelling drainage, red streaks, fever or symptoms that become worse after initially improving.
Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, a rapidly spreading rash or any severe allergic reaction. Permanent makeup can rarely cause infection or allergic reactions, as noted by the FDA .
If you ever need an MRI, tell the radiologist or MRI technician that you have permanent makeup, especially permanent eyeliner.
