Permanent eyeliner is a cosmetic tattoo along the lash line that defines your eyes every day, without smudging, flaking or a morning routine. The question most clients have is how bold to go.
Here are the permanent eyeliner styles we do at Soulu, how to choose one for your eye shape, and what to expect from the procedure, healing and cost.
Permanent Eyeliner Styles
1. Lash Enhancement
The most subtle style. Pigment is placed between the lashes along the lash line, so lashes look thicker and darker, as if you were born with a natural liner. Nobody sees "eyeliner," just more defined eyes.
Best for: a no-makeup look, first-timers and anyone who rarely wears liner.
2. Classic Liner
A thin, defined line along the upper lash line that looks like a neat eyeliner pencil.
Best for: clients who wear eyeliner every day and want the same look without the routine.
3. Soft Wing
A thin line with a small, soft wing at the outer corner that lifts and elongates the eye. It is our everyday version of a cat eye: soft enough for the office, defined enough for evenings.
Best for: clients who love a winged look.
| Style | Look | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Lash enhancement | Invisible, thicker-looking lashes | First-timers, natural look |
| Classic liner | Neat, defined pencil line | Daily eyeliner wearers |
| Soft wing | Lifted, elongated eye | Fans of a winged or cat-eye look |
Permanent Eyeliner for Hooded Eyes
On hooded eyes, a thick line or a long wing can disappear under the lid or look heavy when the eyes are open. A lash enhancement or a thin classic line usually works best. If you want a wing, we design it with your eyes open, so it is visible and lifts the eye instead of folding into the crease.
Permanent Eyeliner for Mature Eyes
As eyelid skin becomes thinner and softer, fine lines look more flattering than bold ones. A soft lash enhancement makes lashes look fuller and the eyes brighter, without settling into fine lines. Many mature clients also find permanent eyeliner helpful when applying liner becomes harder because of vision changes.
How to Choose Your Style
- Start subtle. It is easy to add more definition at the perfecting session and much harder to take it away.
- Think about your everyday makeup. If you wear liner only on weekends, a lash enhancement is usually enough.
- Trust the drawing. We draw the line first and adjust it until you love it.
Remember that healed eyeliner always looks softer and thinner than on the first days.
Is Permanent Eyeliner Safe for the Eyes?
The pigment is placed in the skin along the lash line, not on the eye itself. Your artist explains every step before starting.
Before your appointment:
- Remove lash extensions and pause lash growth serums; we give you the exact timing when you book.
- Remove contact lenses before the procedure and bring your glasses.
- Tell us if you have an eye infection, recently had eye surgery, are pregnant or take blood thinners or other medication.
Does Permanent Eyeliner Hurt?
We apply numbing cream before and during the procedure. Most clients feel light pressure or vibration along the lash line, and the eyes may water a little. The procedure takes about 1.5–2 hours. Read more in does permanent makeup hurt?
Permanent Eyeliner Healing Stages
- Days 1–2: eyelids may look puffy, especially in the morning; the line looks darker and thicker than the healed result.
- Days 2–4: the lash line may feel tight or mildly tender; fine crusting may begin.
- Days 4–7: small flakes come off on their own; the color may look uneven or lighter.
- Days 7–10: surface healing is usually complete.
- Weeks 4–6: the final color shows.
Avoid mascara, eye makeup, lash curlers, extensions and lash treatments until fully healed, and start with a new mascara afterwards. Wear clean glasses instead of contacts for at least 48 hours. See the full eyeliner aftercare guide.
Can I Wear Lash Extensions With Permanent Eyeliner?
Yes, once the lash line has fully healed. Lash extensions need to be removed before the procedure and should not be reapplied until healing is complete.
How Long Does Permanent Eyeliner Last?
Permanent eyeliner usually lasts 1–2 years, depending on your skin, sun exposure and aftercare. A perfecting session after full healing (6+ weeks) refines the line, and a refresh every 12–18 months keeps it crisp.
How Much Does Permanent Eyeliner Cost?
At Soulu, permanent eyeliner costs $400 – $1,500, depending on the artist. The consultation is free. Compare prices in how much does permanent makeup cost.
Is Permanent Eyeliner Worth It?
If you wear eyeliner every day, have watery eyes that make liner smudge, play sports, or find it harder to apply liner neatly, permanent eyeliner saves time every morning and looks good from the moment you wake up. Book a free consultation for permanent eyeliner in Edgewater, NJ.
