Lip blushing heals in stages, and almost every client panics at least once: first because the color is too bright, then because it seems to disappear. Both are completely normal.
Here is the lip blush healing process day by day, what you should do at each stage and when to call us. In short: the surface heals in about 7–10 days, and the final color appears after 4–6 weeks.
Lip Blush Healing Timeline at a Glance
| When | What you see and feel |
|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | Swelling, tenderness, very bright or dark color |
| Days 2–5 | Dry, tight, chapped lips; light peeling begins |
| Days 5–10 | Peeling finishes; the surface feels smooth |
| Weeks 2–4 | Color looks very light, uneven or almost invisible |
| Weeks 4–6 | Color returns and settles into the healed shade |
Day 1 and Day 2: Bright Color and Swelling
Right after the procedure your lips look bright and bold, much darker than the final shade. Swelling and tenderness are normal and usually settle within a day or two.
- Rinse the lips gently with clean water after eating or drinking and blot them dry.
- Apply a thin, even layer of the aftercare product your artist recommended, with a clean cotton swab.
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce swelling.
- Drink carefully; a straw can help keep the lips clean.
Day 3 to Day 5: Dry, Tight and Chapped
The lips feel dry and tight, a bit like chapped lips, and light peeling begins. The color may look patchy as the first flakes come off.
- Keep the lips lightly moisturized with the recommended product whenever they feel dry.
- Do not pick, peel or bite loose skin. Pulling it off can take pigment with it and cause uneven healing.
- Brush your teeth carefully and keep toothpaste off the lips. No whitening toothpaste or whitening strips until healed.
Day 5 to Day 10: Peeling Finishes
The peeling finishes and the surface starts to feel smooth again. Surface healing usually takes 7–10 days.
Until then, avoid lipstick and gloss, lip scrubs and plumpers, kissing, pools, saunas, heavy sweating and direct sun. Avoid very hot, spicy, salty or acidic food if it stings.
Weeks 2–4: Why Does Lip Blush Fade While Healing?
This is the stage that scares most clients. Once the peeling is over, the color can look very light, uneven or almost invisible. Many people ask, "Did my lip blush disappear?"
It didn't. The pigment is still there. A thin layer of new skin has formed over it and needs time to become clear again. This is why you should never judge lip blush before six weeks.
Weeks 4–6: The Final Healed Color
The color gradually comes back and settles into its healed shade. Lip color can take up to six weeks to show its final look, and healed color is always softer than on the first days.
Lip Blush Healing After a Touch-Up
Lips often heal less evenly than brows, so most clients benefit from a perfecting session. The SPCP (Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals) recommends waiting at least six weeks after a lip procedure. Healing after a touch-up follows the same stages, usually with less swelling. Cold Sores During Lip Blush Healing
A lip procedure can trigger a cold sore in people who carry the herpes simplex virus. If you have ever had cold sores, tell us before your appointment; your doctor may recommend antiviral medication beforehand. If antiviral medication was prescribed, take it exactly as directed.
If you notice tingling, unusual burning or clustered blisters while healing, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
When Can I Wear Lipstick After Lip Blushing?
Wait until the lips have fully healed, usually 7–10 days, and start with clean or new lip products. Once healed, you can wear any lipstick or gloss over your lip blush.
Does Lip Blush Hurt?
Lips are more sensitive than brows, so we apply numbing cream before and during the procedure. Most clients describe the feeling as mild pressure. After the procedure, the lips can feel tender and swollen for a day or two. More in does permanent makeup hurt?
How Long Does Lip Blush Last?
Lip blushing usually lasts 1–2 years. Daily SPF 30+ lip balm, avoiding exfoliating products on the lip border and a color refresh every 12–18 months keep it looking fresh.
