Does permanent makeup hurt? For most clients, much less than they expect. With numbing cream, permanent makeup usually feels like mild pressure, scratching or vibration, not sharp pain. Lips are the most sensitive area, brows the most comfortable.

Fear of pain stops more people from booking than anything else, so here is an honest breakdown, area by area.

How Painful Is Permanent Makeup? Area by Area

Procedure What most clients feel Sensitivity
Nanoblading Mild pressure, light scratching Low
Powder & ombre brows Light vibration or tingling Low
Permanent eyeliner Light pressure or vibration; eyes may water Medium
Lip blushing Mild pressure; lips are more sensitive Medium to higher

How Numbing Works

At Soulu we apply numbing cream before and during every brow, lip and eyeliner procedure. The first layer goes on before we start, and we reapply it as we work. You can ask for a break at any time.

Does Permanent Eyebrow Makeup Hurt?

Brows are the most comfortable area for most clients. Nanoblading feels like mild pressure or light scratching; powder brows feel like a light vibration or tingling. Learn which brow technique suits you in nanoblading vs microblading vs powder brows.

Does Lip Blush Hurt?

Lips have more nerve endings, so lip blushing is usually the most sensitive procedure. With numbing cream, most clients describe mild pressure rather than pain. Afterwards the lips can feel tender and swollen for a day or two.

Does lip blush hurt more than filler? Lip blushing works on the surface of the lips over a longer session, while filler is a few injections. Most people find both manageable with numbing; what feels worse depends on the person.

Does Permanent Eyeliner Hurt?

Most clients feel light pressure or vibration along the lash line. The eyes may water a little, which is a reflex, not a sign of pain. Eyelids can be slightly puffy for a day or two after.

What Makes Permanent Makeup Hurt More

Some things make the skin more sensitive:

  • Alcohol and caffeine. Avoid both for 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Your period. Skin is often more sensitive around it; if you can, book for another week.
  • Being tired, hungry or stressed. Eat a proper meal and get a good night's sleep.
  • Tension. Slow breathing and a relaxed face really help.

How Long Does It Hurt After?

Once the numbing wears off, the area may feel tender, tight or slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually settles within a day or two. Lips and eyelids swell more than brows. During healing, itching is more common than pain; see the brow healing stages and lip blush healing stages.

Does Permanent Makeup Hurt More Than a Tattoo?

Most clients say it hurts less than a body tattoo. The pigment is placed more superficially, and numbing cream is used throughout, which is not always the case with body tattoos.

Tips for a More Comfortable Appointment

  1. Eat a proper meal before you come.
  2. Skip coffee and alcohol for 24 hours.
  3. Bring headphones and a favorite playlist or podcast.
  4. Tell your artist if you feel anything sharp; we will add numbing or take a break.
  5. Wear something comfortable: procedures take 1.5–2.5 hours.
