Permanent makeup is one of the few beauty careers you can start from zero, build quickly and grow into premium prices through skill. But to work legally in New Jersey, you need more than a weekend class.
Here is how to become a permanent makeup artist in NJ, step by step: training, supervised models, insurance, the AAM exam and the license. I have trained over 1,000 students as an AAM-certified trainer, and these are the questions I hear most often.
Do You Need a License to Do Permanent Makeup in New Jersey?
Yes. In New Jersey, AAM certification (American Academy of Micropigmentation) is the standard pathway used to obtain a permanent makeup license. Rules differ from state to state, so if you plan to work elsewhere, check that state's requirements. AAM and state agencies make all final decisions.
The Path at a Glance
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Complete professional PMU training |
| 2 | Perform 15 supervised, documented model procedures |
| 3 | Get professional liability insurance ($1,000,000 minimum coverage) |
| 4 | Submit your portfolio and application to the AAM |
| 5 | Pass the written AAM exam |
| 6 | Apply for your license |
Step 1: Get Professional Training
You do not need previous beauty experience. A good basic permanent makeup course covers:
- Theory: skin anatomy, pigments and color theory;
- Technique: machine handling, needle configurations, mapping and shaping for brows, eyeliner and lips;
- Health and safety: sanitation, bloodborne pathogens and cross-contamination protocols;
- Client work: consultation, consent forms and documentation;
- Practice: first on latex skin, then on live models under supervision.
Step 2: Complete Supervised Model Procedures
Practice on real clients under a trainer's supervision is what turns theory into skill. To meet AAM requirements, you need 15 supervised model procedures, each documented with before-and-after photos, consent forms and procedure logs.
Step 3: Get Professional Liability Insurance
Before you apply to the AAM, you need professional liability insurance with minimum coverage of $1,000,000. It usually costs around $100 per month.
Step 4: Submit Your Portfolio to the AAM
Your application includes your training certificate, model documentation, insurance and the application form. The AAM reviews and approves your materials before you can take the exam.
Step 5: Pass the AAM Exam
The AAM board exam is written only; there is no practical part. Once you pass, you receive your official AAM certification. AAM credentials are recognized in many states.
Step 6: Get Your License
With AAM certification, you can apply for your permanent makeup license in New Jersey. Check the current state requirements before you apply.

The in-person part of our Basic Training takes 4 days, with pre-study materials before class. The AAM Certification Package totals 100 hours of training, including 15 supervised models. After that, the timing depends on how quickly you complete documentation, insurance and the AAM review, exam and license application.
How Much Do Permanent Makeup Artists Make?
Income depends on your prices, skill and how many clients you see. On our course page we show example scenarios at three price levels: $300, $750 and $1,200 per procedure. These are examples, not guarantees: building a client base takes time, a strong portfolio and great healed results.
For comparison, procedures at our studio cost $400 – $1,700; see how much permanent makeup costs.
Choosing a Permanent Makeup School in NJ
- Is the trainer AAM-certified? Your training documentation matters for the AAM application.
- How many supervised live models are included? You need 15 for the AAM.
- Is the group small? You need individual feedback, not a lecture.
- Is there support after the course? Your first months of real clients are when you need guidance most.
- What do the trainer's healed results look like?
After Basic Training: Advanced Techniques
Once you are licensed and experienced, advanced techniques such as nanoblading let you offer premium hair-stroke brows. See nanoblading training for PMU artists.
